What do you get when you combine someone in a turkey costume, over 65 runners chasing after him, 350 pounds of non perishables, and $400 for the Derry Sonshine soup kitchen? Happy Merry Hallo Giving!!!!
Our first annual Happy Merry Hallo Giving was a blast. The day dawned perfect, crisp temps, clear sky’s, and volunteers showing up early to help.
One question I still have is how, when the kids were supposed to tackle the turkey (Jeff Hensley in a turkey costume) did I end up at the bottom of a pre-race pig pile!?!
But kids and turkey did race, with the honors going to Dylan Below for taking an early lead, leaping over the fallen turkey in the finish chute and winning the race.
The adults cut into the turkey’s 30 second head start by counting a very fast 20, and then taking off. The turkey was no match for Nathan Huffe, who in his own words “Dusted him!”
Congratulations to young Sarah Muller who at age 14 led the woman’s 5k, and to Javone Mullens and Nicole MacKinney for the best costume. I’ve never seen running Christmas trees before, but hope to see them again!
Mostly however thank you to everyone for coming out and showing your support for the community. The directors at the soup kitchen were especially grateful for your generosity. The food you donated and the proceeds from the race have been a huge blessing to them during this time.
God’s best to you all, looking forward to seeing you next year!
Mike Kelly for the team.
